The Tartar Rifles and the Naval Brigade

The Tartar Rifles were the 5th Commission's IS  Platoon (Internal Security ie landing parties, boarding parties, control of civil disorder ashore, back up the 'booties' - as if they needed it, etc) who were trained in things 'military' at a time when 'Jack' was rarely handed a weapon with bullets in it!

What does etiquette mean?

As a Leading Writer, working onboard the Tartar, we were based in the Wardroom flat, and so got on with the Stewards, as well as sharing a mess.  The Captains Steward, was Marty Farmer, a 'bloody nice chap' who had a great sense of  humour, but was a stickler for doing things properly.

Anyone remember painting this on the oil store bulkhead at HMS Malabar, Bermuda?  Well it's still there today along with several other ship's crests.
